Microsoft End of Life Products – What happens.

Microsoft End of Life policy is done in two stages, mainstream and extended. The primary difference is in the type of updates that are still offered.

Microsoft End Of Life Mainstream support ends:

  • Microsoft no longer provides non-security hotfixes unless the software has an extended support agreement.
  • It is the official end of the warranty period.
  • No new features or design changes are accepted.

Microsoft End Of Life  Extended support ends.

  • No more security or reliability patches.

Windows Server 2003 Vulnerability

When extended support ends there are no new security patches, which means the operating system becomes vulnerable to new threats. It also means that the system will not be PCI compliant (necessary for taking Visa and MasterCard). The other thing that happens is that applications will update for new operating systems and may discontinue support for the older one.

Migration is recommended. Microsoft Migration Site.

General steps are:

1. Discover:  Determine which applications and workloads are running on Windows Server 2003 today.

2. Assess:  Categorize applications and workloads by type, importance, and degree of complexity.

3. Target:  Choose a migration destination for each application and workload, either in the data center or in the cloud.

4. Migrate:  Build your migration plan – do it yourself, collaborate with Northern Computer, or use a service.
